Obverse description The obverse displays the elaborately calligraphed tughra of Sultan Selim III in the upper field, rendered in the ornate Ottoman imperial style with characteristic looped and interlaced strokes. Below the tughra, the mint name 'Islambol' (Istanbul) appears in Arabic script, flanked by additional legend identifying the ruler. The regnal year expressed in the Islamic Hijri calendar appears to the right of the tughra. The entire design is enclosed within a plain linear border with a dotted or beaded outer rim. Note: this example bears a suspension hole, indicating former use as jewelry or an ornament.
