Obverse description Central field displays the papal coat of arms of Pius VI, consisting of a vertically divided shield bearing a fleur-de-lis and a bend, surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter. Five stars appear above the shield within an oval cartouche. The circular legend reads PIVS SEXTVS PONT M A XXII, distributed around the periphery in Roman capitals, denoting Pius VI as Supreme Pontiff in his twenty-second regnal year. The overall design is executed in fine relief characteristic of late eighteenth-century Roman minting.
