Obverse description Left-facing bust of Sun Yat-sen occupying the central field, rendered in high relief with fine hair and collar detail. The surrounding legend in Chinese characters reads 中華民國二十五年 (Year 25 of the Republic of China), arranged vertically at right and left and along the upper periphery. The portrait is modelled in a restrained, Western-influenced sculptural style characteristic of engraver John R. Sinnock's work for the Republic of China coinage patterns.
