Obverse description Central field displays the Portuguese royal arms, comprising the quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross) above the castles of the bordure, rendered in characteristic late medieval hammered style. The shield is set within a plain inner circle. A Latin legend encircles the design along the outer border, reading the abbreviated royal title of King Manuel I of Portugal. The irregular flan and weak strike areas are typical of hammered coinage of this period.
