Moẓaffar od-Dīn Shah came to the throne in 1896 following the assassination of his father Nāṣer od-Dīn, and his reign proved financially catastrophic for Iran. Desperate for funds — largely to finance his three European tours — he negotiated two major loans from Russia in 1900 and 1902, surrendering significant customs revenue as collateral and accelerating the economic resentments that fed directly into the Constitutional Revolution of 1906, which effectively ended his absolute authority months before his death.
The half-tumân saw genuine circulation pressure during this period of monetary instability. KM#993 is known across multiple die varieties reflecting the inconsistent output of the Tehran mint under fiscal strain.
