Obverse description Central field features a crowned oval shield bearing the royal arms of Portugal, flanked on either side by the Porto mint mark 'P' and a small 'C' countermark. Below the shield, the denomination value is expressed as four Roman numeral X's (XXXX = 40 réis equivalent notation). The entire design is encircled by the Latin royal legend reading PETRVS·II·D·G·REX·PORTVG, identifying the issuer as Pedro II, by the grace of God, King of Portugal. The crown above the shield is rendered in high relief with fine milled detail characteristic of late 17th-century Portuguese coinage.
