Obverse description A large royal crown occupies the central field, rendered in fine relief with decorative detailing. Immediately below the crown appears the denomination mark XXXX, denoting 40 réis in the counting convention of the period. The circular legend surrounding the central device reads IOANNES.V.D.G.P.ET.ALG.REX, identifying the issuer as King João V of Portugal and the Algarves by the Grace of God. The legend is set in Latin capital letters and runs along the coin's inner border. The overall composition is characteristic of the restrained, formal engraving style of early 18th-century Portuguese milled coinage.
