| Reverse description | The reverse features a bold plain cross pattée occupying the central field, with the mint mark letters E positioned in each of the four quadrants formed by the arms of the cross, denoting the Évora mint. A circular Latin legend surrounds the cross, reading IN HOC SIGNO VINCES, a well-known Christian motto meaning 'In this sign thou shalt conquer,' referencing the vision of Constantine. The legend and cross are rendered in the robust, slightly irregular style consistent with mid-17th century Portuguese hammered silver coinage. The flan edges are uneven and show typical planchet irregularities associated with the hammered technique. |
