Reverse description The reverse displays the Portuguese royal arms arranged in a cross pattern, consisting of five escutcheons each charged with bezants (quinas), forming the distinctive quinary shield composition of the House of Burgundy. The five shields are arranged in cruciform fashion: one at the center and one at each cardinal point, all enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding circular Latin legend FERNANDVS REX PORTVGAL AL encircles the design, identifying the issuer as Fernando I, King of Portugal and the Algarve. The overall style is consistent with Gothic die-engraving of the Iberian Peninsula in the late 14th century.
