Reverse description The Portuguese royal arms displayed as a cross pattée composed of five escutcheons, each charged with five bezants arranged in saltire, forming the quinas of the kingdom of Portugal. The central escutcheon is flanked by four subsidiary shields set at the cardinal points within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding circular legend reads FERNANDVS REX PORTVG. The design follows the standard heraldic arrangement established for Portuguese medieval coinage of the first dynasty.
