| Obverse description | Crowned royal shield of arms displaying a rampant lion within a tressure, set within a plain shield surmounted by an ornate crown. The heraldic device is rendered in the bold, slightly crude style characteristic of late sixteenth-century Scottish hammered coinage. A beaded inner circle frames the central device, with the royal legend disposed around the periphery of the flan. The strike is moderately sharp at center with typical weakness toward the irregular edges. |
