| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of Holy Roman Emperor Matthias II facing right, wearing a ruff collar and armored pauldron, with a laurel wreath adorning his head. The effigy is rendered in high relief in the early Baroque style typical of Habsburg portraiture of the period. A beaded inner border frames the design. The encircling Latin legend reads: + MATTHIAS·D·G·RO·IM·S·AVG·GER·HV·BOHEM·REX, identifying the ruler as Matthias, by the grace of God, Roman Emperor, ever august, King of Germany, Hungary, and Bohemia. |
