Obverse description The entire field is occupied by a multi-line Latin inscription in bold relief, reading ANNO M·D·LXXXVIII· E NOVIS IN ARGENTI FODINA AD GLADERACHVM DEO LARGIENTE REPERTIS VENIS LUDOVICVS LANDGRAVIVS HASSIAE &c., commemorating the discovery of new silver veins at the Gladebach mine by God's grace in 1588. The text fills the field in horizontal lines from top to bottom, rendered in the Renaissance lapidary style characteristic of late sixteenth-century German mining coinage. At the bottom of the field, the mintmaster's mark F+F appears. The coin's inner border is formed by a fine beaded ring. This reverse-style inscription face serves as the documentary obverse for this Ausbeute (mining bounty) issue.
