Obverse description Draped bust of Bishop Joseph Ignatius Philip of Hessen-Darmstadt facing right, wearing ecclesiastical robes with a pectoral cross suspended on a chain across the chest, and an elaborate lace or jeweled pectoral ornament. The hair is long and curled in the baroque manner. A circular Latin legend runs along the periphery, with a mintmark below the bust truncation. The coin features a finely milled border.

Reverse description A pontifical mitre at center divides two oval crowned armorial shields: to the left, the arms of the Bishopric of Augsburg bearing a harp, and to the right, the quartered arms of the Hessen-Darmstadt family. Both shields are surmounted by ornate crowns and flanked by decorative baroque scrollwork. The date 1744 appears in the lower exergue, and the circular Latin legend NON FECIT PROXIMO MALUM surrounds the entire composition.
