Additional information

John Eucharius Schenk of Castell held the see of Eichstätt for less than four years, from 1690 until his death in 1694 — the same year this half thaler was struck. His episcopate coincided with the prolonged economic disruption following the Thirty Years' War and the ongoing strain of Louis XIV's Rhine campaigns, which squeezed the smaller ecclesiastical states of the Holy Roman Empire particularly hard. Coinage from his brief tenure is scarce by any measure, and the 1694 date makes this among the last issues authorized under his name.
