Obverse description Half-length armored bust of Duke Frederick William facing slightly right, clad in elaborately engraved plate armor with fur-trimmed mantle and a ruff collar, his bearded visage rendered in high relief. The date 1585 appears divided on either side of the figure within the inner circle. Four heraldic shields — displaying the arms of Saxony, Thuringia, Meissen, and related territories — are positioned at the cardinal points around the bust, framing the composition within a beaded inner border. The circumferential Latin legend, abbreviated and interrupted by the shield devices, reads D:G · FRI WIL · DV SAX LAN · THV · E MAR · MI · MO · IMI, identifying Frederick William by his ducal titles by the grace of God.
