Obverse description Armored and draped bust of Duke Ernest Frederick of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld facing right, wearing a cuirass with elaborate decorative detail and a lace cravat. The hair is styled in the fashion of the period with curled locks falling to the shoulder. The circumferential legend in Latin reads ERNESTVS FRIDERICVS D G D S COBVRG SAALFELD, separated by stops, running along the inner border of the coin. The portrait is rendered in a baroque style characteristic of German princely coinage of the mid-eighteenth century, with fine detail in the armor and drapery.
