Obverse description Central field features an elaborate ornamental cartouche enclosing a stylised Basel crozier (the city's heraldic staff) rendered in intricate foliate scrollwork. Surrounding the central medallion, eight smaller circular shields bearing the arms of the eight associated Swiss cantons are arranged symmetrically, each set within decorative foliate sprays. The entire composition is framed by a finely toothed inner border and a broad milled outer rim. The engraving is executed in a refined Baroque manner consistent with early eighteenth-century Swiss civic coinage.
