| Additional information |
Basel's half thaler coinage of the late seventeenth century was struck at a moment when the city-republic was navigating the financial pressures of Swiss cantonal politics and the broader instability of the Nine Years' War raging across the Rhine. The city mint operated with considerable autonomy — Basel had long maintained its own monetary system largely independent of imperial oversight, a practical consequence of its geographic and commercial position at the junction of France, the Empire, and the Swiss Confederacy.
The HMZ 2#80d designation places this piece within a tightly documented sequence. Die deterioration across the 80-series is well attested by specialists.
