Obverse description Central field dominated by the arms of Basel — a crozier-headed black staff on a white field — set within an elaborate Baroque cartouche flanked on either side by two rampant basilisks whose sinuous bodies form the ornamental surround. The cartouche is richly scrolled in the late seventeenth-century decorative manner. The circular Latin legend reads DOMINE · CONSERVA · NOS · IN · PACE, separated by pellet stops and running along the inner edge of a beaded border.
