Obverse description Seated figure of an armored angel in three-quarter view occupies the central field, holding an orb surmounted by a cross in the left hand and a shield bearing the arms of Zug in the right. The figure is rendered in high relief in a late Renaissance style. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading the canton name and date. The overall composition conveys the civic authority of the Canton of Zug.

Additional information

Zug was among the smallest and least populated of the Swiss cantons, and its independent coinage issues were correspondingly rare in both frequency and surviving numbers. This half thaler falls within the Thirty Years' War period, when silver coinage across the German-speaking world was severely disrupted by the Kipper- und Wipperzeit — a debasement crisis so destabilizing that many mints temporarily suspended operations or flooded markets with underweight issues. Zug's small output likely insulated it from the worst of that manipulation, though surviving pieces from this three-year window remain genuinely scarce.
