Additional information

Rostock's civic coinage of this period reflects the city's position as a commercially assertive Hanseatic member navigating the fractious monetary environment of the Holy Roman Empire. The city retained minting rights jealously, and its half thaler production in the first decade of the seventeenth century predates the catastrophic debasement of the Kipper- und Wipperzeit by roughly a decade — meaning surviving pieces are struck in honest silver before that crisis gutted standards across northern Germany.

Kunzel 100a distinguishes this variety within a small group of closely related dies from this emission.
