Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of Queen Mary I of Scotland, depicted wearing a French hood and ruff collar with fine drapery detail characteristic of the mid-16th century hammered coinage style. The effigy is rendered in high relief with the queen's portrait occupying the central field. A crowned thistle countermark, applied in 1578, appears to the left of the bust in the field. The surrounding Latin legend, interrupted by the date at the base, reads clockwise from the lower left.
