Henry II's teston series was central to his broader monetary reform of 1549, which attempted to stabilize French silver coinage after decades of weight manipulation under Francis I. The half teston occupied a practical denominational gap, but production was uneven across the royal mints, and Paris issues from 1552 specifically are noted in the Ciani corpus as scarcer than their 1551 counterparts — a gap likely attributable to disruptions from the Austro-French conflict in the Rhineland that year diverting crown resources.
