Obverse description Crowned effigy of Francis I facing right, rendered in the Renaissance portrait style characteristic of early 16th-century French coinage, with flowing hair visible beneath a fleur-de-lis-ornamented crown. The bust is shown in profile, truncated at the shoulders, set within a plain inner circle. The Latin legend encircles the effigy in the outer field, separated from the central device by a beaded or cord-like border, reading FRANCISCVS DEI GRA FRANCORV REX.
