Obverse description The obverse displays the crowned Portuguese royal coat of arms at centre, featuring the traditional quartered shield with castles and bezants, surmounted by a royal crown. The shield is flanked by decorative foliate scrollwork on either side. The circular legend reads 'INDIA PORTUG.' around the upper periphery, with the date '1871' positioned in the lower field beneath the shield. The entire design is enclosed within a toothed or beaded border.

Reverse description The reverse presents a plain field bearing the denomination inscription arranged in four lines at centre: '1/2', 'TANGA', '30', 'REIS'. The denomination is surrounded by a wreath of laurel and oak branches tied with a ribbon bow at the base. The outer border consists of a continuous toothed or beaded rim, consistent with the milled technique employed at the Mumbai Mint.
