Obverse description Central field displays the crowned arms of Leiden — a shield bearing two crossed keys in saltire, the traditional heraldic emblem of the city — set within a plain inner circle. The hammered flan produces a characteristically irregular surface with uneven relief. A circular Latin legend surrounds the shield along the outer border, separated from the inner circle by a narrow band. The overall design is bold and heraldic in style, consistent with emergency coinage produced during the Siege of Leiden in 1574.
