Ceylon passed from Dutch to British control in 1796, but the colonial monetary system remained a patchwork for nearly two decades — Dutch-era stivers, local fanams, and imported coinage circulating alongside each other without coherent policy. The 1815 issue coincides precisely with the fall of the Kandyan Kingdom, the last independent polity on the island, which Britain annexed that year following the Kandyan Convention of March 2nd. Whether this timing reflects deliberate monetary consolidation or administrative coincidence is debated, but the stiver denominations were phased out within years as sterling-based coinage took hold.
