Obverse description Crowned frontal effigy of Edward III, depicted facing slightly left, with the royal crown rendered in Gothic style above the sovereign's head. A leopard passant is positioned in the lower left field beneath the bust, serving as a heraldic emblem of the English monarchy. The portrait is executed in the crude but vigorous hammered style typical of Aquitainian feudal coinage of the mid-14th century. The circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, inscribed within the coin's irregular flan.
