Issued to mark the Royal Air Force's centenary, this Gibraltar half sovereign is one of dozens of commemorative gold pieces the territory has produced under licensing arrangements that allow it to issue coins with no obligation to circulate them. The RAF was formally established on 1 April 1918, created by merging the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service — a bureaucratic consolidation that met considerable inter-service resistance at the time.
