Obverse description Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Diamond Diadem Crown, with a drop earring and necklace visible, executed in high relief against a deeply mirrored proof field. The portrait is the fourth definitive effigy of the Queen as used on Channel Islands coinage. The surrounding legend reads ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRA REGINA · ALDERNEY C.I., with the date 2018 positioned in the lower exergue. The initials JI, referencing the engraver Joel Iskowitz, appear subtly beneath the portrait.

Additional information

Alderney holds a peculiar position in numismatic history — a Crown Dependency with the legal right to issue its own coinage, yet one so small (population under 2,000) that its coins are struck entirely by the Royal Mint and exist almost exclusively as collector pieces. This "Fighting for Freedom" issue commemorates the island's wartime experience under German occupation from 1940 to 1945, during which the entire civilian population was evacuated and Alderney became the site of four forced-labour camps — the only such camps on British soil.
