Obverse lettering ELIZABETH II DEI·GRA·REG·F·D RDM
(Translation: Elizabeth the Second by the Grace of God Queen Defender of the Faith)
Reverse description The reverse displays the classic Benedetto Pistrucci design of St. George on horseback, slaying the dragon with a broken lance, rendered in high relief against a plain field. The mounted figure of St. George is shown in right profile, the dragon coiled beneath the horse's hooves. The date and the engraver's or mintmaster's initials B.P. (for Benedetto Pistrucci) appear in the exergue below the design. The composition remains faithful to the iconic Pistrucci original introduced on the sovereign series in 1817.
