Obverse description A fully armored standing knight occupies the central field, depicted in three-quarter view facing right, holding an unsheathed sword upright in his right hand and a bundle of arrows — emblematic of the Union of Utrecht — in his left. The knight stands before the crowned provincial shield of Zeeland, which bears a rampant lion emerging from waves, the heraldic device of the province. The encircling Latin legend reads MON : NOV : ARG : PRO : CONFŒD : BELG : COM : ZEL, denoting this as a new monetary issue of the County of Zeeland of the Confederate Netherlands. The coin exhibits a deeply reeded edge and a boldly milled border characteristic of the Middelburg mint's production.
