Obverse description Frontal bust of King Ioel rendered in a schematic, late Aksumite style, wearing a crown or elaborate headdress adorned with a cross finial above the head. The king is depicted in regal attire with dotted or beaded ornamentation visible on the garment. The Ge'ez legend ዮኤል ንጉሥ (meaning 'Ioel, King') is distributed around the central effigy in the field. The die work is characteristic of the hammered coinage of late Aksumite rulers, with an irregular flan and somewhat crude but deliberate engraving.
