Chinese provincial food stamps — liangpiao — were rationing coupons issued by regional grain bureaus under the national rationing system that ran from 1955 until its abolition in 1993. They were not currency, but in practice traded informally as such, particularly during periods when grain allocations were tight. Liaoning's 1974 issues fall squarely in the middle of the Cultural Revolution administrative period, when provincial bureaus operated under heavy central planning constraints.
The half shi jin denomination — roughly 250 grams — was the smallest practical unit, used primarily for urban residents making single-meal grain purchases at state canteens.
