Issued as part of Israel's "Holy Land Sites" commemorative series, this half sheqel honors the Valley of Kidron — the ravine running between Jerusalem and the Mount of Olives that has served as a burial ground for thousands of years and features in both Jewish eschatological tradition and early Christian narrative. The series itself was short-lived, produced during a period when Israel's domestic inflation was accelerating toward the catastrophic hyperinflation of 1984–85 that eventually forced a complete currency reform and the replacement of the sheqel with the new sheqel in 1986.
