Obverse description Central field displays the ornate Papal coat of arms of Pope Pius VI, consisting of an escutcheon with heraldic devices surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys, all within an elaborate cartouche with scrollwork mantling. The date 17-78 is divided at the base of the arms. The circular Latin legend around the periphery reads PIVS VI PONT MAX AN IIII, denoting the pontificate and regnal year, separated by raised dots. The coin exhibits a fine milled border.
