Obverse description Armored and draped bust of Philip II facing left, wearing a ruffled collar, enclosed within inner linear and outer beaded circles. The regnal year appears at the commencement of the circumferential Latin legend, with the royal titles continuing around the field border. The portrait is rendered in the late Renaissance style typical of Spanish Viceregal Sicilian coinage of the mid-sixteenth century.

Reverse description A crowned lozenge-shaped (rhomboid) shield bearing a quartered coat of arms displayed within a decorative wreath of wheat ears. The four quarters of the shield incorporate the heraldic devices of the Spanish Crown territories, including the Aragonese pales and the eagle of the House of Habsburg. The composition is symmetrically arranged with no surrounding legend, the wreath forming a naturalistic border around the entire armorial device.
