Reverse description An elaborate ornamental cross with a stylized rose at its center, the four arms of the cross rendered in flowing acanthus-leaf scrollwork in baroque style. Below the horizontal arms, the escutcheon of Cardinal Branciforte, Legate of Bologna, appears at lower left, and the civic arms of Bologna at lower right, each set within decorative mantling. Three six-pointed stars are disposed in the lower field. The circular Latin legend * BONONIA * DOCET * occupies the outer border, separated by star stops.
