Cooch-Behar occupied an awkward political position in the early 1770s — nominally independent but caught between Bhutanese military pressure from the north and expanding Company influence from the south. Rajendra Narayan's reign ended when he was killed fighting the Bhutanese in 1772, the same year the kingdom formally invited East India Company intervention. That intervention ended Cooch-Behar's practical monetary autonomy almost immediately.
This issue spans only those final two years of indigenous rule before the Company's treaty reshaped the state's administration.
