Additional information

India's post-independence coinage transition was methodically tested through an extensive pattern series before any designs entered circulation. This piece is one of several 1949 nickel trials produced without the security edge or other finishing details — the "w/o furnace" designation almost certainly refers to the absence of the milled or reeded edge treatment applied in final production runs, distinguishing it from otherwise identical trial strikes. The newly formed Republic was simultaneously negotiating the shift away from the anna system, and pattern production reflected genuine uncertainty about which denominations and specifications would survive into the decimal reform of 1957.
