This issue dates to the period when Saudi Arabia was consolidating its decimal monetary system, having introduced the halala subdivisions only in 1963. The dual denomination — simultaneously 1/2 Riyal and 50 Halalas — reflects the transitional arithmetic of that reform, bridging the old fractional riyal system with the new centesimal one. King Faisal, who had deposed his brother Saud in 1964, was by 1972 less than three years from his assassination in the royal palace by a disaffected nephew.
