Obverse description The Irish Free State cláirseach (Gaelic harp), rendered in fine detail with its soundboard decorated with interlace ornament and foliage, occupies the central field. The date is divided on either side of the harp's column, with the first two digits to the left and the last two to the right. The circular legend in Gaelic script reads SAORSTÁT ÉIREANN (Irish Free State), running from lower left to upper right around the periphery, bordered by a milled rim.
