Obverse description Central field divided into four quadrants by an ornate cross, each compartment bearing a distinct heraldic shield: upper left with the Hohenzollern quartered arms, upper right with the Franconian eagle, lower left with a rampant lion, and lower right with a rampant lion passant. Foliate or Gothic trefoil ornaments fill the interstices between the shields. The circular Latin legend surrounding the composition reads the names and titles of the two co-ruling margraves, Casimir and George, with the date 1525 incorporated prominently into the upper portion of the legend. The overall design reflects the late Gothic German Renaissance die-cutting style characteristic of early sixteenth-century Franconian coinage.
