Obverse description The obverse displays the Costa Rican countermark applied to the host coin's reverse field, featuring the denomination '1/2' at lower left and 'R.' at lower right flanking a central tree motif. The circular legend surrounding the inner design reads 'LIBRE CRESCA FECUNDO' with mint mark 'CR', assayer initial 'E', and fineness designation '10 D. 20 G.' separated by pellets. The countermark itself, struck within an oval or circular punch, depicts a walking lion above a legend, consistent with the Type VII official government habilitación punch used during the 1849–1857 countermarking period.

Reverse description The reverse of the host coin displays the Central American Federal Republic design: three volcanoes rising from the sea beneath a radiant sun, all contained within a circular border. The surrounding legend reads 'REPUB. DEL CEN. DE AMER.' with the date '1831' positioned in the lower exergual area between pellet stops. The design is characteristic of the Central American Republic coinage struck at the San José mint, rendered in low relief with a serrated or milled outer border.
