| Obverse description | Royal Gothic initial 'Y' (for João) surmounted by a crown in the central field, flanked by the mint marks 'P' and 'O' (or 'P' alone on the left) denoting the Porto mint. The surrounding legend reads IHOS:DEI:GRA:REX in uncial Latin letters. The coin is struck in a characteristically irregular hammered flan with a beaded inner border framing the design. |
