Obverse description Central field displays a Gothic letter E surmounted by a royal crown, rendered in uncial style typical of medieval Portuguese coinage. The crowned E monogram, denoting Eduardus (King Duarte I), is flanked by the mint mark L (Lisboa) and a cross symbol, the relative positions of these two elements distinguishing the two known varieties. A circular legend in uncial Latin script runs around the periphery within the irregular flan. The overall fabric is characteristic of hammered copper coinage of the Avis dynasty, with a slightly uneven, hand-struck planchet.
