Reverse description The reverse displays the Portuguese royal arms: a cross pattée formed by five escutcheons arranged in cruciform pattern, each escutcheon bearing small bezants (quinas), within a beaded or plain inner circle. A surrounding circular legend in uncial Latin letters names the king. The overall design follows the standard Portuguese billon and copper coinage convention of the mid-fifteenth century, with the shield arrangement typical of the House of Aviz.
