João I came to power through war, not inheritance — his 1385 victory at Aljubarrota against Castile secured the throne for the House of Aviz and made him the first king of a new dynasty. The coinage that followed was issued under severe monetary pressure: decades of Castilian conflict had disrupted trade and depleted bullion reserves, forcing the crown to rely heavily on billon issues of declining fineness.
The Porto mint's activity during this reign is notably documented by the three Gomes varieties assigned to this type, suggesting meaningful die variation across the issue's twelve-year span.
