Additional information

The Supreme National Congress of America — the insurgent governing body established by José María Morelos in 1813 — authorized its own coinage as a direct assertion of administrative independence from the Viceroyalty of New Spain. These pieces were struck at Sultepec and other provisional mints operating under difficult field conditions, which accounts for the characteristically crude workmanship found across the series. Morelos understood that issuing coin was a political act as much as an economic one.

The .903 fineness was deliberately set to match royalist standards, a calculated move to encourage acceptance in contested territory.
